The rising star of the inanga (a traditional Rwandan stringed instrument), 31-year-old Sophie Nzayisenga is keeping traditional Rwandan music alive and giving it a modern appeal with her amazing live performances. She is one of the few inanga players left in the country and is very unique, as the inanga is traditionally an instrument played by men. Sophie became enamoured with the instrument as a child, and her father - upon noticing her natural talent - decided to pass on his gift. Sophie is signed to Rafiki Records, which has provided her with the opportunity to record with other Rwandan artists, and her riveting live performances combine traditional Rwandan sounds with reggae, pop, poetry and jazz to create a uniquely modern twist on an ancient art. |
